Goths are known for their all black looks, melancholic melodies, and fascination with the darker side of life, but is that all they are? From Shego to the Hex Girls I am listing 10 of the best goths in cartoons.
Shego from Kim Possible
Why is Shego so far down on the list?! You may be asking…or not… but while she does have a darker aesthetic that is pretty much all. She is snarky and a great antagonist to Kim, but she really doesn’t have other gothic characteristics besides that. She is unique in her own right, but when it comes to gothic aesthetics there’s bare bones.
9. Marshall Lee from Adventure Time
Is this cheating? Maybe. Do I care? Slightly. Marshall Lee is the genderbent version of Marceline the Vampire Queen. Marshall has a fascination with music and the darker side of life. He also turns into a giant bat. (Major goth points there.) But since he is essentially a spin off character and thus giving him the ninth spot.
Lydia Deetz from the Beetlejuice TV Show
Okay, okay, okay. I can forgive Shego, but Lydia?! You may also be saying…again. Yes she is very well known for the movie adaptation, but not so much her cartoon origins. The movie was based on the original cartoon and Lydia is portrayed very differently. She is a happy go lucky kid that has a dark aesthetic and a fascination for the unusual things in life. But that is really all.
7. Gwen from Total Drama Island
Gwen definitely deserves a mention. She is not quite as monotone as other characters mentioned later in the list, but she has her moments of wit and is a more happy version of them. Gwen loves to write about her feelings which is a goth characteristic. She isn’t afraid to tell you how it is and do it in a way all he own.
6. Sam Manson
The gif really says it all. What is the goth thing to do when presented with something flowery, girly, or even something remotely sunny and cheery? They make it black, rip it up and make it unique! Sam is a side character that brings her uniqueness to the show with her dark one-liners and style. I don’t know a goth that wouldn’t want her bedroom.
5. Hex Girls from Scooby Doo!
It would be a sin to not have the Hex Girls be in the top five. The batty beauties brought a lot to the episodes that they were in. As far as their vampy vocals and great gothic aesthetic they really are one of the best when it comes to goth characters. Plus who wouldn’t want a bat shaped guitar?! Plus, plus, they are nice people and goth are just generally nice people.
4. Ennui and Crimson from The Ridonculous Race
Ennui and Crimson are more characters from Total Drama Island, but they are worthy mentions. It is obvious that Ennui and Crimson are very stereotypical goths, but stereotypes comes from some bit of truth…right? These emotionless and humorous characters play off of each other in their dark and moodiness. Their love for obscure music really set them higher on the list. Mix these lifeless people with the chaos of a reality tv show and you have great characters.
Marceline from Adventure Time
Marceline is a literal Vampire Queen! She floats around with her guitar playing rock jams and singing about how alone she is. If that’s not goth I don’t know what is. She is a sensitive and kind person which shows throughout the show, giving her the third spot.
Raven from Teen Titans
It’s not everyday your dad is a spawn of hell, but you’ve got to make the best of it! (Plus those are some major goth points.) Raven’s dry humor and sarcastic one-liners make her stand out. She loves all things dark and is inclined to the heavy, melancholic side of music. Plus her powers are black!
The Goth Kids from South Park
These moody middle schoolers are probably as accurate of a description as you can get. They listen to the quintessential goth bands such as: The Cure and Bauhaus. Nonconformity is their name and feeling pain is their game. They drink coffee and don’t like to socialize much. And they do this all in dark, romantic clothing fit for Robert Smith himself.

You can definitely tell you're writing about something you're familiar with and I like goth girls so it was an enjoyable read as well. You managed to maintain a friendly and lighthearted tone throughout and your own voice really stuck out in the writing. I think you did Shego dirty by placing her in the 10th spot but I do think the Goth Kids from South earned their 1st place position. Also the GIFS really aided in the conceptualization of the characters you're discussing.
I thought that your voice is super clear in this and I loved the lighthearted, funny mood you wrote with. I liked the formatting you had from more or less worst to best, it makes me want to stay until the end to see who's the best! I liked that all of the images were gifs, it made it more fun to read! I really loved it! 😊
